Support the Women's Building Fund!
"Sister, can you spare a five?” could be the slogan of the Women's Building Fund, which is sponsoring space for local women's organizations in the Civic in Cleveland Heights. This Woolfian dream grew out of the Cleveland Feminist Conference in 1981, which identified establishing a women's building as a top priority for the women's community. Such a space could provide the opportunity for shared planning and use of
resources.
For the next year, the Building Fund Committee, made up of Rita Coriell, Gayle Crawford, Jamie Hecker, Debra Hirshberg, and Jean Hrichus, explored the options of purchase vs. renting space and determined that renting was more feasible at this time. The Civic, located on the corner of Mayfield and Lee Roads, is accessible by public transportation and is ideally located for many east side women's organizations.
In only its first month of existence, this community space is generating new ideas and resources, not to mention its stabilizing effect on the groups that have taken up residence. The Women's Wholistic Center and What She Wants opened their offices on October 1, and the Women's Coffeehouse will move their Saturday night coffeehouses to the Civic's Center Hall starting January. Other groups have inquired about meeting and office space, and the Committee is
looking at ways to meet as many needs of the community as possible. The Building is staffed full

Even with renting space, the Women's Building Fund has taken on a large commitment in time and money. The long-term goal is to support the space through an endowment fund. For the next two to three years, however, the Fund will rely on individual donations. The Committee and 15 other charter sponsors are currently conducting an intensive fundraising campaign to meet monthly expenses. As the budget illustrates, the goal for this year is $16,800, of which approximately $6,000 will come from rent money from the groups that meet and have office space in the building and approximately $1,200 from an annual fundraising event. The remaining $9,600 is expected from individual donations. Over $2,400 has been raised to date.
Sponsors are asking you to give as little as $5 per month-the price of a movie or a MacDonald's-for-two-a small price to pay for the tangible benefits a community center can offer. For those of you who can afford it, sponsors are asking for $10 per month. All donations are tax-deductible. Please send your contributions to The Women's Building Fund, P.O. Box 18129, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118. (Lump sum payments of $60 or $120 are preferred, but less is welcome.)
